Carbon filters are filtering method that uses a piece of activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities, utilizing chemical adsorption. Each piece of carbon is designed to provide a large part of the surface area, to allow contaminants the most exposure possible to the filter media. One pound of activated carbon contains a surface area of about 100 hectares. Carbon is generally activated with a positive charge and is designed to attract the negatively charged water contamination.
Carbon filtration is usually used in water filtration systems. In this illustration, the activated carbon in the fourth level (counted from the bottom). There are two main types of carbon filters used in the filtration industry: filter block filter is activated powder and granular.Secara general, carbon block filters are more effective in eliminating a large number of contaminants, based on the increase in surface area carbon. Many carbon filter also uses a secondary media, such as silver or KDF-55, to prevent the growth of bacteria in the filter.
